Dianetic Therapy, also called Auditing, involves removing the emotional charge associated with moments of pain.

For a person to become "Released", only the emotional charge for those moments of pain that are on the surface or close to it are worked on.

For a person to become "Clear", the first moment of physical or emotional pain must be located and the emotional charge associated with it must be released.

Dianetic Therapy can be compared to what is called Soul Retrieval in Shamanism and also to Psychoanalysis.

The basic technique is to locate the moments of pain and allow the patient to drain the emotional charge associated with them.

There is one important difference, however: In Shamanism, it is common for the Shaman to do the work on behalf of the client.  In Dianetics and Scientology, it is the client that is actually doing the work, guided by the Auditor.
