1 Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes within thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead.

Gilead means Hill of Testimony.  Having "doves eyes" means to be Peaceful.  When Truth is understood, it brings Peace.


2 Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.

Sheep represent the natural life force that flows into man's consciousness from Spirit.  All of them here bearing twins symbolizes the Creative Power of the life force at this high level of consciousness.


3 Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely: thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks.

The lips, metaphysically, symbolize Communication and Speech.  Scarlet symbolizes the life force at a physical level.  Metaphysically, Pomegranates symbolize Righteousness.  Locks of hair symbolize the outward expression of Strength.  Thus, at this level of spiritual development, the faculties of communication are pure and Righteousness is expressed outwardly.


4 Thy neck is like the tower of David builded for an armory, whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.

The neck it the Seat of Power in Man.  At this level of spiritual development, it is strong and the individual is spiritually empowered, as symbolized by the bucklers and shields.


5 Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies.

Breasts symbolize Vitality or life force.  Roes symbolize thoughts of Harmonious and Faithful Contemplation.  Lilies symbolize Spiritual Consciousness.  Thus, Vitality comes maintaining a state of Harmonious and Faithful Contemplation of  Spiritual Consciousness.


6 Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.

Daybreak symbolizes the awakening Spiritual Consciousness.  Myrrh is Eternal Love and Frankincense symbolizes the Transmutation of Materialistic Thoughts into Spiritual ones.


7 Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.

The Soul is pure, at this high level of consciousness.


8 Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon: look from the top of Amana, from the top of Shenir and Hermon, from the lions' dens, from the mountains of the leopards.

Amana means Integrity, Truth and a Nurse. Shenir means coat of mail and breastplate. Hermon means Anathema or Devoted to Destruction.  Truth and Integrity bring protection, symbolized by the breastplate, a destroy obstacles.


9 Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.

The Heart symbolizes Love and the Affectionate Consciousness in Man.  The eyes symbolize Vision.  Chains symbolize Discipline and the neck is the seat of Power.  Thus, at this level of spiritual consciousness, Love manifests through Spiritual Vision that has been brought about through properly focusing Spiritual Power.


10 How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! How much better is thy love than wine! And the smell of thine ointments than all spices!

Wine symbolizes Vitality between the Soul and Body.  Love is the connection between Soul and Spirit, which is much better, as this is the source of Vitality.  Ointments symbolize affirmations of Peace, Poise and Gladness.  Spices symbolize spiritual forces.  Affirmations of Peace, Poise and Gladness are the best spiritual forces.


11 Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.

The lips and tongue both symbolize Communication. Honeycomb and Honey both symbolize Abundance and Prosperity.  Milk symbolizes Spiritual Nourishment and Support.  A Garment symbolizes the Aura.  Lebanon is Spirit.  When Spiritual Truth is our Foundation, we are Nourished by Spirit and we express it in Abundance, our Aura is Strong and Pure.


12 A garden enclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.

The soul is hidden during the Great Work of Spiritual Purification.  It surface as the Work progresses.


13 Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard,

Pomegranates, Camphire (Henna) and Spikenard represent Righteousness, Beauty and Peace, respectively.


14 Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:


15 A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon.

The garden and its plants, as well as the well of living waters, represent pure spiritual energies, as Lebanon represents Spirit.


16 Awake, O North Wind; and come, thou South; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.

The Soul, here represented by the Shulemite, calls the Spirit, symbolized by the North and South Wind, with the energies of Righteousness, Beauty and Peace.
