Effrenus is a Latin word meaning, “wild, unrestrained, unchecked, and unbridled”.  It signifies a state of consciousness that lacks any form of self control and refuses to accept any form of responsibility.  This state of consciousness is characterized by the lower nature being completely unchecked.  People at this level of consciousness have almost completely shed their divine qualities and embraced their lower nature instead.

People at this level of consciousness are prone to act on their lusts and feelings of their lower nature without regard for others. These people can also be quite dangerous.  Without the Higher Consciousness to keep their lower nature in check, they can become the violent people in our society that commit crimes such as domestic violence, rape, and murder.

On the Tree of Death, this level of consciousness corresponds to the third part of Sheol, a Hebrew word meaning Grave.  It is ruled by Thaumiel, the Contending Forces.  These are the base desires and lusts that have become so powerful that they can blot out Compassion and the consciousness of God from within the individual.

In order to rise to the next degree, Bardus, the individual must learn self control and respect for the Divine Consciousness that lies buried deep within them.  The Fire of Calcination, at this level of consciousness, manifests as social rejection, prison, and can even result in the death of the individual as a consequence for their actions and way of thinking.

This degree is the opposite of Ipsissimus.
