The individual’s entrance to the grade of Adeptus Exemptus is marked by their having learned all previous lessons and their having learned Compassion. The title is Latin, meaning, “Exempt Adept”. The student should reflect on their progress and contemplate where their path is heading. The individual must also choose the path they will take through the rest of their life.
In Hermeticism and Spiritual Alchemy, the work of this degree corresponds to the step of Distillation. The individual must then go to the very edge of his\her mind. It is marked by a feeling of mental tension. The individual must then pass beyond this by confronting whatever it is that holds them back from enlightenment. This will be a stronger version of whatever was confronted and released as the individual entered the Philosophus degree. This experience is described as, "Crossing the Abyss". The mind must remain absolutely silent\inactive when confronting these things, in order to move beyond them. A good hint that this process has been completed is the ability to experience joy and splendor.
In Enochian Magick, the Adept must now choose how they will treat the high spiritual knowledge they've obtained throughout their path. Three potential paths are offered: Adherent, Lover or Hermit. The Adherent puts all their knowledge into practice in life, but keeps it a private matter. The Lover gives up his\her personal life and uses that time to teach others about the mysteries of Self and the Universe. The Hermit gives his\her knowledge and understanding to others, but keeps his personal time to himself.
According to the Kabala, this degree corresponds to the sphere of Chesed.
